How it works

  1. Pick what you know: cost and selling price, cost and the margin you want, or cost and your markup.
  2. Profit = selling price − cost.
  3. Margin = profit ÷ selling price × 100 (share of the price you keep).
  4. Markup = profit ÷ cost × 100 (how much you add on top of cost). A 25% markup is only a 20% margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. Buying at 800 and selling at 1,000 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.
Profit margin = (selling price − cost) ÷ selling price × 100.
Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin ÷ 100). For a 30% margin on a cost of 700, the price is 700 ÷ 0.7 = 1,000.
Margin = markup ÷ (100 + markup) × 100. So a 50% markup equals a 33.3% margin.
Yes. If you sell below cost, profit and margin are negative — the calculator shows it as a loss.
